Conflict – Ugh! What is it good for?

Image (this me on my walk in the rain to clear my mind last night. I felt a bit like an old Little Red Riding Hood)

Because my 13th Wedding Anniversary is just around the corner, it seems to make perfect sense that me and DH would get into one of the worst arguments we have had in years.

Two years ago, we had to remove our deck and have been left without an outdoor hang out space.  This coming weekend it looks like the stars have aligned the weather gods are smiling upon us and we are all set to start on our patio project this weekend.

Since DH and myself plan things very differently, I thought it was a good idea to sit down after dinner last night and get a gameplan.  After about 2 minutes, it was clear that my language and his language were lightyears apart.  I resorted to my method of thinking of things and got out the trusty dry earse board and draw our plan out.  I think we would both agree that our plans had the same outcome, but the way were got there was way different.

Needless to say, the conversation deteriorated and I am sitting here this morning with having only said a handful of words to DH since last night and wondering how to move forward.

I think conflict is a necessary part of life, but it just doesn’t make it any easier.  Especially when its with someone you love deeply.  In my quest to find the silver lining in each situation, Today is a New Day.  Better for this argument to take place before heavy machinery is here. We will throughly enjoy that patio once it is finished.

I’m Happy . . . and it feels good.

We escaped to the Cities for a long weekend with the kids and it was great to get away and spend quality time as a family without the distractions of home.  I was again reminded that my life is very blessed.

Upon returning home from our long weekend, the sun and warm weather FINALLY returned to the northwoods.  I don’t know if it was the sun or vitamin D pulsing through my veins but I had quite possibly the best week ever.

The week started with a fabulously relaxing yoga session and ran into an old derby friend, I then went grocery shopping where I spent $120 for a weeks worth of groceries due to some killer coupons. SCORE!!

Tuesday was the most perfect day EVER, I woke up and rode the kids to school on their bikes, ran into 2 more friends and caught up, I did 5 loads of laundry and hung them out on the line (heaven!!), cleaned the house, prepped dinner, rode back and picked up the kids from school, we stopped over for them to play at a park, then back home for snack, a little outdoor playtime, dinner, a family game of Scrabble and then a walk in the woods with a dear friend. I seriously could have died in my sleep that night and have been content.

Yesterday continued to be a great day.  Bike ride, pilates, dinner with friends and an amazing concert by Actual Wolf and Trampled by Turtles.

I can’t believe how different my life is right now from a year ago, but its like I am living the life I am supposed to be.

All I have to say, Life is Good.

Are you there Spring?!? It’s Me Sarah!

Image

I woke up this morning to another 4 inches of snow, its April 18.  This precipitation should be falling as rain. I love the snow in let’s say December, January and maybe even February, but as we get closer get to what should be spring the piles of white stuff make me a little crabby. The old saying says “April showers, bring May flowers.” I always assumed it was rain showers.

As I have been working really hard to find the silver lining in any situation, here are a couple of reasons I am happy for the snow:

  1. I get a bit of outdoor cardio. Shoveling is an excellent way to squeak in some cardio and fill the lungs with fresh air!
  2. The precipitation that falls as snow melts slower and will help it to soak into the ground and reduce drought and hopefully help with any flood threats this spring.
  3. I have a couple of more weeks to continue on the Insanity program before I will be baring my arms and legs to the public.
  4. No brown snowbanks! Often this time of year we would be looking at brown dirty snowbanks!  Not around here, we have nice white snowbanks.
  5. No mud is being tracked in the house.  Often this time of year the kids are tracking in dirt and mud from playing outside.  Not now.  Just snow.

Ok, that last one is a stretch.  Yesterday at yoga class we were encouraged to meditate for sunny warm weather.  I encourage all of you to try! Afterall it can’t hurt!

Insanity Week 1 and Hair Day 3

20130412-093434.jpg

So, I am proud to say that I survived my first week of Insanity and I am already seeing results. The muffin top is shrinking and a couple pounds are gone. The biggest adjustment has been the food. I have had to increase my calorie intake by 800-1000 calories, which you think would be counter productive, but its working.

The workouts are challenging, but doable. Again, I am really happy to have developed a moderate level of fitness before I started this. If you are new to fitness or maybe just a casual worker-outter. I would recommend doing Fitness Blender Videos for a couple weeks to get conditioned. They are easy to follow, well produced and best of all, they are FREE!!

The most challenging workout so far has been the Pure Cardio. Most of the Insanity workout are 6-7 minute warmup and then a 5-7 minute stretch followed by 15 minutes of intervals that are 3 minutes on then 30 second of rest. It then finishes with with 3-4 minutes of stretching. Pure cardio messes with your mind a bit. This workout starts the same with the warmup and stretch, but then does 15 minutes straight of intense OUCH!! I don’t know that I have ever sweat that much before. Definitely feeling it today. Tomorrow is a rest day and I am really looking forward to it.

NOW FOR THE HAIR!!!!

So in my mind, I have always had the most amazing flowing locks of hair. In reality, I have fine, short hair. I finally suffered through a grow out for more than a year, ugh and I am excited to finally be able to wear the I have always wanted. My mom thinks they are awesome as she has always wanted the luxurious flowing hair herself. The hubby and kids aren’t too sure. I sported them out in public for the first time yesterday. (Sidenote: it was a funeral, perhaps not the best place to debut new hair, but its my new look)

Things I was not expecting was to feel a bit weird wearing them. I know they are fake, but have a commentary running in my head if other people think they are. We live in a small town. Anyone who saw me on Tuesday with my short brown hair would see that I now have long blonde hair. My final conclusion is that they make me feel better. I like what they look like and I feel that is what is the most important part.

I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Insanity and New Hair

Well, I would first like to apologize my lack of upkeep on this site. I have 2 additional sites that i have been trying to get up an running, but with 3 blogs, I have zero that i have kept up to date.  It makes me sad and mad at myself as lots of exciting things have been going on lately.  Oh well.

As I tell the kids, today is a new day.

Near the first of the year, I embarked on a weight loss fitness/improve my fitness journey.  With the help of my amazing trainer, Geri.  I was able to shed something like 35″ over all in 12 weeks.  I went from walking 30 minutes a day to doing hard interval circuits.  I am stronger and more fit then what i have been in years. Sadly, my training sessions with Geri has expired and now I am left on my own.  OH NOOOOOO!!!

With boat and bathing suit season being just around the corner, I am looking at getting in shape to where I actually want to wear a bathing suit and not something that looks like a Birka.  Enter the Insanity workout

If you have watched any late night TV, you have seen Shaun T and his crew pitching his workout program.  I have to say I was a little scared about trying this, but after watching a portion of the workout on YouTube, I know I can do this.  I am also dragging Paul along in this journey and he’s eagerly coming along for the ride.

Being he is a runner, this interval training is a lot different then the repetitive workouts he has been doing.  I hope my knee holds up with all the jumping I am thinking are ahead.  I am also adopting the eating plan that came with the program.  According to the equation for daily calorie burn, i have been eating any where from 800 to 1000 less then I should for optimal weight loss.  This morning I choked down a bowl of oatmeal with protein powder, fruit and walnuts.  Gag!! We’ll see if I see a difference eating more.

Another exciting event this week is that I will be getting my hair extensions!! I have for my whole life wanted long flowing hair.  Unfortunately, I was morning with fine hair and its ability to grow to any thing other than thin and baby like is not possible.  Can not wait!!

I think this week is going to be a good week!

Day 3: Salt Scrub

Day 3 – Salt Scrub

E has been suffering from awfully dry hands this past couple of weeks.  I found this recipe on Pinterest for a nourishing salt scrub.

In this project I used the following:

  • 1 cup Epsom Salt
  • 1/2 cup oil (saffron oil – I am sure you could use other kinds, this is what I had on hand)
  • 5 drops of essential oils
  • small mason jar
  • 1 drop food color

Mix all of the ingredients together and there you have a wonderful smelling salt scrub.

I tested it out on E and he kept saying it felt weird, but his hands feel as close to as they did when he was a baby.  Smooth and supple.

My week continued in the direction is was heading in last week with a broken car and a $650 repair bill.  Seriously, I am living in a very depressing country song: Car broke down, dog died and lost my job.  I am determined to come out of top and better because of everything I have experienced in the past week.  This too shall pass and this too I shall over come.

I will leave you with this tonight, I have had this song stuck in my head all day.  One I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Dolly and if this doesn’t lift your spirits I don’t what will.

Day 2: Tie Rug

The Tie Rug

So for sometime I have been wanting to make a tie rug for the kids bathroom out of my favorite pair of sheets that got holey. This project took more than one day, I worked on it for 3 to  be exact, but am very happy with the results.

This project was an excellent practice on patience which is something I really struggle with as my ADD usual kicks in and I am one for wanting instant gratification.  There is alot to be learned about powering through and seeing it completed.

For this project I used the following:

  • King Size sheet, cut into 5in by 1in strips
  • Misc left over fabric cut into 5in by 1in squares in this project I used a old pillowcase and an old t-shirt.
  • non-skid rug backer cut to size

I then just randomly tied the strips of fabric to the non-skid mat.

I also took Frank for a walk in on the Pokegama Dam Ski Trails.  Despite the gloomy weather it was a good day for a walk.  Here’s Frank checking out the Mississippi River.  I am pretty sure if I had let him off of his leash he would have launched himself off the side of the river banks.

The walk was a great way for me to mediate and clear my head and enjoy the nature and scenery around me.  So full of inspiration and relaxation.
